Marieta

Childhood memory. Mareita was a maid for our family. She would come early in the morning to start the fire in the kitchen and make coffee. She would seat us up on the warm counter and give my brother and I a small tin cup full of sweet coffee and a small french bread. I felt her love for me. She was from Haiti. After she left our home, I longed for her return. Mareita will always be in my heart.

Para La Gallera

I could hear the noise of many voices yelling, but I could not distinguish the words… it was la gallera! A place where I couldn’t go, it was only for the men who wanted to see the cock fights.
